Ponderosa pine trees festooned with "wolf moss" lichens, eastern Washington.
Historically, the bright, yellow-green, wolf moss lichens were dried and ground into powder, and then sprinkled on meat to poison wolves and foxes. The bitter, vulpinic acid in the lichens will also repel slugs and snails when scattered around a garden.
