Candystick or Sugarstick (Allotropa virgata), Gifford Pinchot National Forest, Washington

Allotropa virgata contains no chlorophyll; it obtains all its nutrients from an association with a fungus in the soil, which in turn derives all if it's nutrients from a tree or shrub (often Douglas-fir and/or salal). And not just any fungus- it associates with the fungus that produces the commercially valuable matsutake mushrooms in the fall.
