Leucistic Dark-eyed Junco, western Washington

Leucistic Dark-eyed Junco, western Washington

This is the western, "Oregon" form of the Dark-eyed Junco that is strangely marked with a white face. This condition is called leucism, which is a patchy loss of pigmentation (in this case, melanin). Leucism is not that rare in juncos, but this individual is quite unusual!
